This state park felt safe and welcoming, especially for two female campers. There were lots of other women around, creating a comfortable atmosphere. Despite being nearly full, the park was peaceful by 8 pm. However, campsites are close together, and the park's proximity to the city (a neighborhood borders one side) detracts from a true wilderness feel.

Lake is low! Walking on beach is fun. Saw two eagles a deer and lots of pelicans! Campsite was level and large. Nice fire in the evening! Great bike riding! Friendly hosts and rangers!

This place is a hidden gem among State Parks. Campsites are incredibly private. Park is well kept. Plenty of trails for the family and a few fishing ponds as well. Thereโ€™s even a little beach with sand for the kids to play!

Lake Somerville State Park- Birch Creek seemed to be busier than the Nails Creek side. I hiked around the Bluestem Bend and Beautyberry trails which was a pretty area. No wildlife spotted. I then headed over to the Lake Somerville Trailway area which had a lot of fishermen around the creek but the main bridge passage was closed off.

Camp spot 106 is right next to the horse shelter. You can smell the poop all night. Overall, very nice place to camp.

We camped 3 nights at the Post Oak campground and thoroughly enjoyed it. The park is well maintained by competent, friendly people, with sites that provide privacy and a lake view. The facilities show their age, but are so well maintained it is hardly a drawback. T Mobile service was good. The only complaint, we did not see the Bald Eagles but did see a Caracara.
