BUYER & SELLER BEWARE

I am a 10+ year customer of A1, including play, sell, and reseller license status. I used to purchase a few thousand dollars of product a year from them, until today. Update 10/20. See owner response and handling on sac store review.

I have a few stories you need to know.

A few days ago, I bought sealed product from them that appeared in mint condition, but when the packs were opened, it was damaged. There was one pack missing of the 36 packs, and the box didn’t have an outer seal. Someone opened a pack, saw it was damaged and then put it out anyways. A significant amount of packs at a significant value per pack with significant damage in every pack. I brought the box back with over ⅓ of the cards I pulled from the remaining trash and the heat damaged inside of the packaging, showing the damage. They couldn’t help me without a manager so I had to come back. I came back and the answer was zero refund, zero store credit and management said “that’s collecting”. They wouldn’t offer a partial credit, or have any more conversation with me. I know that they curated the items some time ago, stored them for years inappropriately and damaged the items.

For all TCG players, they are overly strict on grades compared to tcg and eBay. When they use tcg prices and then take 40% of that and knock down further for “grade” you are getting 10-20% of what you can on eBay. This is a rip off.

They don’t buy grades cards. They claim because the customer likes grading it themselves, this is nonsense. When you have a graded card you have to go off market value not tcg value. For cards over $20 sell on eBay and pay the packaging.

For people liquidating their collections, DO NOT WORK WITH A1. Their owners and buyers are notorious for lying to customers about the value. I know of a dozen stories where someone’s life collection or inheritance was stripped from them for pennies. This is probably the most egregious practice they have. Run the other way.

Buying: Everything of value they are putting on eBay, they have an eBay store front. The remaining items are tossed in stores, but the items they took from your inheritance are going at a premium on eBay.

When I went to their Roseville store I bought top loaders for $3 a pack. Their sac store has them for $5. Same product. I asked to price match with their other location and they refused. Literally bad business all the way through.

As a business owner, I rarely post negative reviews, knowing that the measure you use on others will be used on me. In this case, that needs to happen. This is a terrible company and known as the goodwill of collecting to those that buy/sell.

For your own sake, if you are new to this industry, I hope this reaches you, and they lose your business. Fire and Ice, The Cave, literally go anywhere else.

To the guys and gals at Roseville, I’m sorry this company reflects on you. You’re some good people who work for a bad business.

Cute shop, goes off tcg prices for singles (which is what i bought today) and the people there are willing to help and upbeat! i had a pleasant experience and will definitely stop by again 🙂

Update.
After supporting this store since they first opened (original and current location). I am canceling my saver and taking my business elsewhere. Everything I said in my original 5 star review is no longer true. It pains me, but last thing I expected as a regular for decades was contempt, disrespect, unnecessary confrontation, and an attitude that my business wasn't worth the bother. Its a shame, really. I am a life long hobbyist and have supported A-1 for decades, through comic cons, pandemic, auctions. Drove countless others to them by refferal. I wouldn't bother writing this if it was a simple missunderstanding. It wasn't, I was made to feel unimportant and that their need to be correct trumped my desire to simply buy their product.

As a life long comic collector I value service probably over everything else. I know I can get most of my collection by subscription, but I choose to keep coming back because of the excellent service. I also am impressed by the smart pivot they made during the pandemic to online auctions and such, continuing that was a smart business move. Highly recommend to new and old collectors.
